The Impact of Design Thinking on Digital Solutions
A great digital solution is defined by the value it delivers to both end-users and the organization. Ensuring that a solution’s design aligns with user needs and business goals is a shared responsibility among stakeholders. Research shows that organizations prioritizing the design thinking process in problem-solving experience higher revenue and improved shareholder returns.
For example, McKinsey conducted an extensive study revealing that such organizations achieve revenues a third higher than competitors and 56% higher shareholder returns.
The Design Thinking Process
The Design Thinking Framework is an iterative process that helps product development teams empathize with users, challenge assumptions, define clear problem statements, and design creative solutions. Product teams can never say, “We have now developed the solution, so we watch it grow.” Instead, the design thinking process is a journey, not a destination, meaning teams must continuously iterate based on new insights—even after launching a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) or reaching market fit.
This process includes several key stages that guide the journey. While the steps often follow a logical order, teams may sometimes begin in the middle and work their way forward or backward as new insights emerge.
Empathise
In this phase, the product manager or lead researcher aims to understand users deeply—their challenges, goals, and behaviors. The key to this phase is empathy, which means engaging with users through structured research methods such as user interviews. Some essential questions to explore include:
- Who are we empathizing with?
- What do they need to do?
- What do they see, say, and hear?
- What are their pain points and gains?
By the end of this stage, the development team should have a clear picture of users’ needs, pain points, and motivations.
Define
Based on insights from the Empathize stage, the team distills findings into a problem statement—a clear articulation of the key challenges users face. This phase also seeks to:
- Sharpen key questions – Helping the team focus on specific problem areas.
- Uncover non-obvious insights – Capturing key user concerns that may not have been explicitly stated.
- Encourage reflection – Taking time to think outside the box for creative problem-solving opportunities.
Ideate
Ideation is a collaborative phase where the product team and stakeholders brainstorm potential solutions to the defined problem. The key takeaways from this stage include:
- Identifying opportunity areas – Solutions do not always have to be new applications; sometimes, optimizing existing services can deliver significant value.
- Documenting all ideas – Every idea from brainstorming sessions should be captured, as they could lead to innovative solutions later.
- Iterating beyond the MVP – Even after launch, continuous ideation ensures ongoing product improvement.
Prototype
The Prototyping phase brings ideas to life through cross-functional collaboration between product managers, engineers, designers, and quality assurance teams. A prototype is the first tangible representation of the solution, designed to test key concepts before full-scale development. This prototype may serve as an MVP, helping validate whether the insights from the Empathize phase have been successfully translated into a working solution.
Test
Testing ensures that each product iteration delivers real value to users. The product team—especially the PM, designer, and QA—gathers user feedback on:
- Usability – Are users navigating the solution effectively?
- Functionality – Does the product meet user expectations?
- Experience – Are there any friction points in the journey?
Feedback from the Test stage informs further iterations, often looping back into earlier stages to refine the problem definition, prototype, or solution strategy.
Is the Design Thinking Process a Linear Process?
While the design thinking process may appear linear in theory, in practice, it is highly non-linear and flexible. Development teams often revisit earlier stages based on new insights, constantly refining the product strategy. As mentioned earlier, product teams must keep “iterating until awesome.”
Rather than following a strict sequence, each stage functions as a standalone mode that contributes to the team’s overall product development strategy. With every new insight or knowledge gain, previous stages are revisited to restructure the problem statement or refine the solution. This approach leads to a market-fit product that delivers value to both users and stakeholders.
